The History of Libya in Modern and Contemporary Times

Authored by a team of Russian historians led by Professor Alexei Vassiliev—a prominent figure in contemporary Russian Oriental studies who also edited the original Russian edition—the book was first published in 1992 by the Institute for African Studies in Moscow. It was translated directly from Russian into Arabic by Dr. Mohamed El-Gebali (Head of the National Center for Translation, Egypt). Spanning 276 medium-format pages, the work is organized into ten chapters. These cover the Ottoman presence in Libya starting in 1551, followed by the Karamanli era, the second Ottoman period, the Italian occupation, the British military administration, and the era of independence; the historical account extends to the Gaddafi regime up to 1988.
